Maia Charlotte Mitchell was born on August 18, 1993 in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. Her father, Alex Mitchell, is a taxi driver while her mother, Jill Mitchell, whom she considers her greatest musical inspiration, is an educator. Maia has only one sibling, her younger brother named Charlie Mitchell. She was brought up with her brother in South Wales, where the family resides. The actress studied at Trinity Catholic College, Lismore.

As a young girl, Maia Mitchell took dance lessons, and was known in school for her active participation in theater productions. The enthusiastic young girl would later turn to local theater productions. Her big break came in 2006 at age 12 when she was spotted by talent agencies. As a result, she landed a role in a children’s series – Mortified where she got to play Brittany Flune. But then the series lasted only a few months (June 30, 2006 – April 11, 2007).

His performance in Mortified landed him the role of Natasha Hamilton in another Australian television series, Trapped which aired between 2008 and 2009. In 2011, the youngster also played the same role in Castaway, the sequel series to Trapped.
