What Happened To Gideon In Criminal Minds?
Jason Gideon is murdered in the Season 10 episode "Nelson's Sparrow," having been shot at a close range by serial killer Donnie Mallick, whom Gideon and David had investigated 30 years before. The episode also features flashbacks to a young Gideon, portrayed by Ben Savage, alongside a young David, who replaced Mandy's character in season 3 of Criminal Minds. The official reason for Mandy Patinkin's departure was given as "creative differences." Later, in interviews, Mandy suggested he had a deep aversion to the show's disturbing content. In 2012, Mandy told New York Magazine that joining Criminal Minds was the "biggest public mistake" he had made. Mandy quit Criminal Minds shortly before season 3 as he felt the content was "destructive to [his] soul and personality." He revealed that he didn't know that the series would show the killings and rapes of women "every night, every day, week after week, year after year," and the extreme violence took an overwhelming toll on Mandy's life.

Jason Gideon was shot dead at close range by Donnie Mallick, whom he and David had investigated 30 years before. Jason quit from the BAU in the series. Mandy did not return for Criminal Minds season 3. The actor left apologetic letters for his fellow cast members, describing his reasons and wishing them luck. Many weeks before his exit, in a videotaped interview carried in the online magazine Monaco Revue, Many said that he hated violence on television and was uncomfortable with specific scenes in Criminal Minds. He said, "I never thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year.
